What happens after a property tax appeal is filed?
The IAAO Standard on Assessment Appeal describes a path that can start with an informal consultation and then move to a formal hearing before an independent body. After that body acts, the owner is told what happened to the number. Some counties skip the informal stop. The formal stop is the case. Hearings are often short. Many are done by phone. This page is the sequence in plain English. It is not a kit for filling out a form.
What happens to the tax bill after the decision?
If the printed value comes down, the next bill is built from the new figure. If the value stays, the bill stays on the old math. A lower value can repeat in later years until the county writes a fresh number. FairAppeal monitors your assessment every year, not just once, because that fresh number arrives on its own. The Fair Appeal watch is how a 2026 win is kept from becoming a 2027 surprise.
